Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans: Effective Development and Implementation Module Series
The Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans: Effective Development and Implementation module series is designed to expand on the Virginia Department of Education’s Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans: Guidelines for Effective Development and Implementation document. Both the guidelines document and this series will empower educators by deepening their understanding of function-based supports. These supports help promote positive behaviors, build academic and behavior-related skills, and effectively reduce persistent interfering behaviors in the school setting. Viewing this six-module series in order and in full will ensure the most effective learning experience. These modules are not intended to be comprehensive or replace federal or state regulations or guidance.

Module 1: FBA & BIP: Foundations and Regulations
Module 1 provides an overview of FBAs and BIPs including associated federal and state regulations, which will lay the groundwork for understanding the legal and procedural framework for FBAs and BIPs.

Module 2: FBA & BIP within a Multi-tiered System of Supports
Module 2 explains how FBAs and BIPs fit within a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS), emphasizing a tiered assessment and instructional approach to behavioral interventions.

Module 3: Basics of Behavior
Module 3 delves into understanding behavior as an observable pattern of events.

Module 4: Understanding Functions of Behavior
Module 4 advances understanding by exploring the functions, or purpose, of behavior.

Module 5: Functional Behavior Assessments
Module 5 explores the practical aspects of conducting functional behavior assessments.

Module 6: Behavior Intervention Plans
Module 6 rounds out the series with a focus on creating effective behavior intervention plans using data from the FBA.
